Not Summed Up

late 1960s, o/c, 43 x 29 in.

Carrie Wilson, lecturer on art and Terrain Gallery coordinator, writes:

Not Summed Up is a portrait of the artist’s father on the beach. I care for this work very much. The relation of weight and grace moves me. Her intention was to show the mystery, the unlimited relation to the world, of a person close to her. He is lying in a space nearly abstract. There is such strength and ease in the arm and hand thrown back above his head, and a jaunty pleasure in the way the toes meet the air and almost touch the sky. Sand is mixed into the paint near his feet.”
